Strong Redshift Clustering of Distant Galaxies

چکیده
We present initial results from a redshift survey carried out with the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph on the 10 m W. M. Keck Telescope of a field 14.6 arc-min in solid angle. In the redshift distribution of the 106 extragalactic objects in this sample we find five strong peaks, with velocity dispersions of ∼500 km s. There is evidence for a non-uniform areal density of objects in at least two peaks. These peaks have characteristics (velocity dispersions, density enhancements, spacing, and spatial extent) similar to those of nearby galaxy structures (e.g., walls and clusters), and these are expected in a survey of this kind. We suggest that the prominence of these structures in our survey relative to that in other surveys can be attributed to our K-selection and dense sampling. The Most Distant Galaxies
I review selected current observations of distant galaxies and our interpretation of the fragile (and occasionally contradictory) data. Galaxies at the “contemporary limit” of technology and redshift (z ∼ 6) are difficult to locate in the first place. Moreover, the large redshift may push some critical confirming and/or interpretative analysis toward unfamiliar IR wavelengths. I will concentrat...
متن کاملThe Angular Clustering of Distant Galaxy Clusters1
We discuss the angular clustering of galaxy clusters at z > 1 selected within 50 deg2 from the Spitzer WideInfrared Extragalactic survey. We employ a simple color selection to identify high redshift galaxies with no dependence on galaxy rest–frame optical color using Spitzer IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 μm photometry. The majority (>90%) of galaxies with z > 1.3 are identified with ([3.6]− [4.5])AB > −0.1 ...
متن کاملClustering of Submillimeter - Selected Galaxies
Using accurate positions from very deep radio observations to guide multi-object Keck spectroscopy, we have determined a substantially complete redshift distribution for very luminous, distant submillimeter(submm)-selected galaxies (SMGs). A sample of 73 redshifts for SMGs in 7 fields contains a surprisingly large number of ‘associations’: systems of SMGs with Mpc-scale separations, and redshif...

An analysis of the cluster environments around distant radio galaxies is presented, in particular the results from new NTT deep optical–IR imaging of the fields of radio sources at z ∼ 1.6. A net overdensity of K–band galaxies is found, together with a sharp peak in the angular cross–correlation amplitude, centred on the radio galaxies. This excess clustering is associated predominantly with re...
متن کاملThe Spatial Clustering of Distant , z ∼ 1 , Early - Type Galaxies
We examine the spatial clustering of extremely red objects (EROs) found in a relatively large survey of 700 arcmin 2 , containing 400 galaxies with R − Ks > 5 to Ks = 19.2. A comoving correlation length r0 = 12 ± 3 h −1 Mpc is derived, under the assumption that the selection function is described by a passively evolving early-type galaxy population, with an effective redshift of z ∼ 1.2. This c...
متن کاملThe Clustering Evolution of Distant Red Galaxies in the GOODS-MUSIC Sample
Aims. We study the clustering properties of Distant Red Galaxies (DRG) to test whether they are the progenitors of local massive galaxies. Methods. We use the GOODS-MUSIC sample, a catalog of ∼3000 Ks-selected galaxies based on VLT and HST observation of the GOODS-South field with extended multi-wavelength coverage (from 0.3 to 8μm) and accurate estimates of the photometric redshifts to select ...
